WHAT IS PUBLIC INTEREST COMMUNICATIONS?

Public interest communications combines public relations, journalism, marketing, storytelling, and systems change to advance the greater good. Also known as social change communications, it’s about engaging people and convincing them to take constructive action on issues that matter to us all—from climate change and health to equity and justice.

Public interest communications prioritizes public benefit over organizational gain. It goes beyond promotion and raising awareness to bridging divides and advancing solutions to society's toughest challenges. In contrast, corporate communications focuses on protecting or promoting a company’s brand, reputation, and bottom line. While both use similar tools—media relations, audience research, key messages—their goals diverge; one seeks societal progress, the other, market success.
